His parents, Lucile Birdsong and Newton Collier, were musicians and led a band called The Sweethearts of Rhythm. Collier began playing piano at age 6 and trumpet at age 10. After graduating from high school he joined friends Sam and Dave who were known for their song "Soul Man." In 1970, Collier moved to Boston, where he continued to perform. In 1976, Collier was shot in the face by an unknown assailant and could no longer play his trumpet or trombone. He then worked as an electronic technician. In 1984, Collier learned to play the electronic valve instrument, a windblown synthesizer requiring far less air than a trumpet. In 1988, Collier moved back to Macon and opened Collier's Records and Tapes, which closed in 1987. Collier then worked as a taxi driver. He retired in 2012.;
