Malveaux obtained her Ph.D. in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980. After completing studies at MIT, she returned to San Francisco working as an assistant professor at San Francisco University from 1981 to 1985. She then worked a visiting scholar and professor at University of California-Berkley from 1985 to 1992. Addressing issues of national affairs, the economy and the American workplace, more than twenty newspapers syndicated her weekly column. She also hosted a weekly radio talk show, Julieanne Malveaux's Capitol Report. She was a frequent contributor to National magazines and newspapers including Essence magazine and USA Today. She appeared on many television shows. She was president and CEO of Last Word Productions, Inc., her own multimedia production company.;
