She then went on to receive her B.A. degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and her J.D. degree from Stanford Law School in 1983. From 1983 until 1992, Lewis worked as an associate for the law firm of Dow, Lohnes & Albertson, the Apollo Theatre, Home Box Office and WTTW Chicago. In 2011, she launched the blog Ground Control Parenting. Lewis served on the board of trustees of several educational organizations, including WNET.org, Early Steps, Stanford Law School, the Collegiate School, the Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies and the Studio Museum in Harlem. She also received the Humanitarian Award for Leadership in Education from the National Urban Technology Center.;
