520 a| Museum founder, director and printmaker Margaret Burroughs was born on November 1, 1917, in Saint Rose, Louisiana. She earned her B.A. and M.A. in art education from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1946 and 1948. She founded the South Side Community Arts Center. It served as a gallery and workshop for African American artists and students. In 1964, Burroughs and her husband, Charles, founded the DuSable Museum of African American History. It became an internationally recognized resource for African American art, culture and history. Burroughs was a printmaker, creating images evocative of African-American culture. Burroughs's work was exhibited at the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington, D.C.; and the Studio Museum in New York City. Burroughs also published several volumes of her own poems, illustrated a number of children's books, and exhibited her artwork all over the world. Margaret Burroughs passed away on her birthday, November 1, 2010 at age 93.;
