Abstract Historian Yvonne Seon was born on December 20, 1937, in Washington, D.C. She graduated as salutatorian of Dunbar High School. Seon earned her B.A. degree with honors from Allegheny College, studied at American University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and received an M.A. degree in political science in 1960. Patrice Lumumba, leader of the Congo, offered Seon a job in his new government during a visit to the United States. Serving as secretary of the Inga Dam project for two years, she also served in a State Department delegation to a UNESCO conference in Paris. Seon helped launch Africare, an African aid organization, serving on the board of directors beginning in 1977. Returning to Washington, D.C. in 1972, she was an associate professor of history at Prince George's Community College. The mother of three children, including comedian Dave Chapelle, she was the first African American woman to be ordained as a minister in the Unitarian Church.
