| Abstract | Television producer Stan Lathan was born on July 8, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lathan graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and began his career directing episodes of Sesame Street as well as Say Brother in 1969. Lathan directed some of the most popular shows on television, including The Redd Foxx Show, Miami Vice, Martin and Roc. In 1989, Lathan partnered with Russell Simmons to create Def Comedy Jam for HBO. He also developed and directed Def Poetry Jam on Broadway which won the 2003 Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event. Lathan received four NAACP Image Awards and the National Black-Owned Broadcasters Award. In 2009, Lathan staged and directed An Evening of Poetry, Music and Spoken Word, hosted by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama in the White House. He directed the BET series, Real Husbands of Hollywood. He served on the board of directors of the RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation. |
