520 a| Spoken word artist Malik Yusef Jones was born on April 4, 1971 in Chicago, Illinois. He was hired to coach Larenz Tate on poetry for his role in the film, Love Jones. In 2002, he performed his poem "I spit..." on the second season of HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam. He released his debut album The Great Chicago Fire; A Cold Day in Hell in 2003. In 2007, Yusef collaborated with Director Frey Hoffman on the short film, Hollywood Jerome. Yusef's 2009 sophomore album G.O.O.D. Morning, G.O.O.D. Night, featured collaborations with Kanye West. Yusef appeared on the track "Sin City" on the 2012 G.O.O.D. Music collaborative album, Cruel Summer. Yusef was the Truth Award "Spoken Word Artist of the Year" from 2001 to 2005. In 2006, Kanye West's album, Late Registration, which featured Yusef's poetry, received a Grammy Award. He received "Best Poet" by Chicago Music Awards from 2002 to 2008.;
