| Abstract |
Historian and educator Merline Pitre was born on April 10, 1943 in Opelousas, Louisiana. Pitre earned her B.S. degree in French from Southern University, and her M.A. degree in French from Atlanta University. Pitre also earned both her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Temple University. In 1976, Pitre joined Texas Southern University as a professor of history. During her career at Texas Southern University, Pitre served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Behavioral Sciences. She also published two books, Through Many Dangers, Toils and Snares, and In Struggle against Jim Crow. With Bruce Glasrud, she edited Black Women in Texas History and Southern Black Women in the Modern Civil Rights Movement. Pitre became the Texas State Historical Association's first African American president in 2011. |
