She graduated magna cum laude with her B.A. degree in English, speech, and drama from Concordia College in Minnesota in 1973. Ferguson also earned her M.B.A. degree in marketing and advertising from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1978. She began her advertising career at the Leo Burnett Company in 1978, where she progressed from an account management trainee to an account executive. In March 1984, Ferguson joined Burrell Communications Group as an account supervisor. She was named the company's Client Service Director in 1993, and managed their accounts with Procter & Gamble Co. and McDonald's Corporation. In November 1997, Ferguson became the Managing Partner of account management and operations and went on to become Co-Chief Executive Officer of Burrell Communications Group in 2004. Ferguson received numerous awards and commendations, including Chicago Advertising Woman of the Year.;
