Abstract Sociologist Willie Pearson, Jr. was born on June 29, 1945 in Rusk, Texas. In 1968, Pearson received his B.A. degree in sociology from Wiley College, graduating with honors. In 1971, Pearson received his M.A. degree in sociology from Atlanta University. He worked as assistant professor in the departments of sociology and anthropology, and as co-director of Positive Parenting Program at Grambling State University. Pearson received his Ph.D. degree in sociology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in 1981 while serving on the faculty of Wake Forest University. In 2001, he became professor of sociology at Georgia Institute of Technology. Pearson has authored several books including Black Scientists, White Society and Colorless Science: A Study of Universalism in American Science and Beyond Small Numbers: Voices of African American Ph.D. Chemists. Most of Pearson's research was centered on the U.S. scientific and engineering workforce and broadening participation of underrepresented groups in science and engineering.
