| Abstract | Civil rights activist and educator James Earnest Roberson was born on June 14, 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama. His family lived across the street from Big Bethel Baptist Church, the meeting place for civil rights activists in Birmingham during the 1950s. Graduating from A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham, he received his B.A. degree in secondary education from Alabama A&M University in 1964. Rooberson earned his M.A. degree in education leadership in 1986 from the University of Alabama, and his J.D. degree from Faith College in Alabama. He spearheaded sit-ins to desegregate Birmingham restaurants. Roberson worked as an educator and administrator for the Alabama School System for nearly thirty years before joining the Ford Motor Company's Minority Dealer Development Program. In 1993, he became the first African American to own a Pontiac dealership, before becoming owner of USA Auto and Budget Truck Rental Store. He retired in 2003. |
