Abstract Art therapist and painter Georgette Ernestine Seabrooke Powell was born on August 2, 1916 in Charleston, South Carolina. Graduating from Washington Irving High School in New York City in the 1930s, she studied at the Harlem Art Workshop and the Harlem Community Art Center. From 1933 to 1937, she majored in art at Cooper Union Art School in New York and was selected as an artist for the Works Progress Administration sponsored murals at Harlem Hospital. In 1959, Powell moved with her husband to Washington, D.C. where she became immersed in the arts society. Studying at the Washington School of Psychiatry, she became a registered art therapist at the American Art Therapy Association. In 1972, Powell earned her B.F.A. degree from Howard University. At age 90, she was the last of the Black Renaissance painters of the 1930s Works Progress Administration (WPA). Powell passed away on December 27, 2011, at the age of 95.
