520 a| Singer Freda Charcelia Payne was born September 19, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan. Attending Palmer and Crossman Elementary School, she appeared on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour in 1956. Graduating from Central High School in 1959, Payne toured with the Pearl Bailey and Duke Ellington Bands, making her album debut with After These Lights Go Down in 1962. Payne moved to New York in 1963, appearing on The Tonight Show. In 1964, she joined the Quincy Jones Tour, and was cast in Hallelujah Baby! in 1967. Payne signed with Invictus Records in 1969, and her hit single Band of Gold reached #1 in the United Kingdom and #3 in the United States. Payne hosted Todays Black Woman, and joined Sophisticated Ladies in 1982. She starred in productions of Ain't Misbehavin', The Blues in the Night, and Jellies Last Jam. Payne's film appearances include: Private Obsession, Sprung, Ragdoll, The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and Fire and Ice.;
