Abstract The Reverend Canon Nan Arrington Peete was born in Chicago in 1938. She attended the University of Chicago Laboratory School for elementary and high school, graduating in 1955. After marrying and having children, she and her family relocated to Los Angeles where, in 1975, she received a B.A. in economics from Occidental College. She later earned an M.A. from the University of Redlands in 1978 and an M.Div. from the General Theological Seminary in 1984. In 1988, Arrington Peete was invited by the Bishop of Canterbury to make the case for women to be ordained as priests in the Anglican/Episcopal Church. As such, she was the first ordained woman to address the prestigious Lambeth Conference of Bishops. Arrington Peete has served the church since 1984 in many capacities. As Canon for Deployment and Ordination, she had primary responsibilities for the ordination process, clergy deployment, and the congregational search process in the Diocese of Washington, D.C.
