Abstract Civil servant Porter G. Peeples was born on October 29, 1945 and raised in Lynch, Kentucky, the coal company town owned by U.S. Steel. The schools, funded by U.S. Steel, were segregated until his senior year. He attended Hazard Community College and later enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where he experienced racism and discrimination as one of only approximately fifty African American students. Not long after he graduated, he became the education director for the Urban League in Lexington, Kentucky, and soon became the director of the local chapter. The youngest person in the United States to hold this position, Peeples has championed many causes as an advocate for the disadvantaged of Lexington. Peeples serves as chairman of the Equity Commission monitoring the Fayette County School. He was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the Kentucky Housing Corporation as the director representing the interests of the homeless population.
