Abstract Human rights activist and judge R. Eugene Pincham born on June 28, 1925, in Chicago but grew up in Alabama. He was a strident critic of the criminal justice system. At Tennessee State University, he earned his B.S. degree in 1947. He received his J.D. degree from Northwestern University in 1951. In 1976, Pincham became judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, and in 1984 justice of the Appellate Court of Illinois. There, Pincham gained a strong reputation as an ardent supporter of the poor. In 1991, he became the Harold Washington Party's nominee for Mayor of Chicago. Although he lost, Pincham carried nineteen of the city's fifty wards. A member of the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP, Pincham taught trial, appellate and advocacy techniques and was the recipient of numerous awards for his professionalism, community service and activism. Pincham passed away on April 3, 2008 at the age of 82.
