| Abstract | Entrepreneur Herman Roberts was born the son of a sharecropper in Beggs, Oklahoma on January 21,1924. He became one of the nation's foremost African American hotel and motel owners. At the age of twelve, Roberts' family moved to Chicago and by age fifteen, Roberts was driving a cab. A hard worker, he earned enough to buy a medallion, he started his own cab company, which grew to 40 cabs. Roberts opened a small lounge in 1953 and the Roberts Show Club in 1954, featuring entertainers such as Sammy Davis, Jr., Redd Foxx and Della Reese. Since segregated hotels created housing problems for performers, he opened the first Roberts Motel in 1960 to such demand that he followed quickly with four others. In 1970, he launched his sixth motel - a huge, fully equipped complex including a ballroom, travel agency and beauty parlor. In 2014, he was pleased to see a street, Herman Roberts Way, named in his honor. |
