Abstract Artist Jonathan Green was born on August 9, 1955, in Gardens Corner, South Carolina. He received his B.F.A. degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1982. Green also received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of South Carolina and the Coastal Carolina University. Green created an autobiographical body of work and documented a vanishing culture's way of life. Green participated in traveling exhibitions throughout the United States as well as in numerous solo exhibitions. His work was displayed in permanent collections of several museums, including The Morris Museum, The Afro-American Museum of Philadelphia, The Naples Museum of Art, and The IFCC Cultural Center. In 1996, Green received an honorary doctorate from the University of South Carolina, and that same year published Gullah Images: The Art of Jonathan Green, reproducing many of his pieces. In 2009, Green received the Key of Life Award from the NAACP.
