| Abstract | Agriculturalist and city councilman Robert Church was born on September 26, 1909, in Athens, Georgia, to sharecropper parents. In 1934, he earned his B.S. degree in agriculture education from Hampton Institute in Virginia. In 1958, he earned his M.S. degree in agricultural education from the Tuskegee Institute. He spent his professional life in Georgia, first as a high school principal. His association with the University of Georgia led to his appointment as Peach County's first African American agriculture agent. His work improved the quality of life for poor African American farmers, as he taught methods to increase crop production. Church spearheaded the Fort Valley Ham and Egg Show from 1949 to 1966. After his retirement, he served two terms in the Fort Valley City Council and as a board member of the Department of Family and Children Services for twenty-five years. Church passed away on December 31, 2008 at age 99. |
