520 a| Broadcast journalist Harry William Porterfield was born on August 29, 1928 in Saginaw, Michigan. After finishing Saginaw's Arthur Hill high school and Bay City Junior College, Porterfield was drafted out of the University of Michigan by the Army which included spending time in Germany. Returning in 1954, Porterfield earned his B.S. in chemistry from Eastern Michigan University at Ypsilanti. He joined Saginaw's radio station WKNX as a disc jockey in 1955, while working as a cameraman and stagehand at WKNX-TV. In 1964, Porterfield became a news writer at the Chicago CBS affiliate WBBM, eventually co-anchoring the news and creating Emmy-winning shows. His popular profile series, Someone You Should Know, aired in 1977. In 1985, Porterfield became a reporter for WLS, an ABC Chicago affiliate. He earned his J.D. in 1993 from DePaul University. A member of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, he played violin in the Chicago Bar Association Orchestra.;
