Harris enrolled at Spelman College and graduated with her B.A. degree in speech and drama in 1964. Harris earned her B.S. degree in business management from the University of Maryland. In 1975, Harris was named personnel staff officer and White House social aide under the Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter U.S. Presidential administrations. She became commanding air officer for the Cadet Squadron 39 at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Harris was named director of maintenance for the Pacific Air Forces Logistic Support Center at Kadena Air Base in Japan. President Barack Obama was a member of the Board of Visitors for the United States Air Force Academy. Harris rose from the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1965 to Major General in the U.S. Air Force thirty years later becoming the first ever African American Female General.;
