| Abstract | TV journalist Gwen Ifill was born on September 29, 1955 in New York City. In 1977, Ifill received her B.A. degree in communications from Simmons College. That year, she worked as reporter at the Boston Herald American newspaper. She worked as political reporter for the Washington Post. In 1991, Ifill worked as White House correspondent for the New York Times. She went to NBC News in 1994 where she was chief congressional and political correspondent. In 1999, Ifill became the first African American woman to host a political talk show on national television when she was named moderator and managing editor of Washington Week. She was also the first black woman to host a vice presidential debate. She was also senior correspondent for The PBS NewsHour. Ifill's first book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, was published in 2009. She received numerous awards including the Peabody Award. Ifill passed away on November 14, 2016 at age 61. |
