520 a| Neurobiologist Erich D. Jarvis was born on May 6, 1965 in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. He received his B.A. degree in mathematics and biology from Hunter College in 1988 and his Ph.D. degree in molecular neurobiology and animal behavior from The Rockefeller University in 1995 where he researched vocal learning in songbirds. After completing his Ph.D. degree, Jarvis served as a post-doctoral research fellow and later an adjunct assistant professor at The Rockefeller University. In 1998, Jarvis joined the faculty of Duke University as an assistant professor in the Department of Neurobiology. In 2005, Jarvis led the Avian Brain Nomenclature Consortium, a team of twenty-eight neuroscientists who proposed a new nomenclature for the bird brain. Jarvis became a tenured associate professor at Duke in 2005. In 2008, he was chosen to serve as an investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Jarvis wrote more than fifty scholarly articles.;
