Abstract |
Historian Thomas C. Holt was born on November 30, 1942 in Virginia attending segregated schools. He worked with SNCC during the Civil Rights Movement. Holt graduated from Howard University with his B.A. degree in 1965 and his M.A. degree in 1966. He began teaching at Howard University in 1972. In 1973, he received his Ph.D. degree from Yale University. As a professor of American and African American history, in 1979, he published Black Over White: Negro Political Leadership in South Carolina During Reconstruction. Holt worked as a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. In 1992, he published The Problem of Freedom: Race, Labor, and Politics in Jamaica and Britain 1832-1938. In 1994, President Bill Clinton named Holt to the National Council on Humanities. In 2000, Holt published: The Problem of Race in the 21st Century and Beyond Slavery: Explorations of Race, Labor, and Citizenship in Post-emancipation Societies. |
