| Abstract | Educator Calvin L. Hicks was born on August 18, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school, he traveled to Iowa and attended Drake University for two years. Hicks moved to Baltimore, Maryland before settling in New York City where he was active in the Civil Rights Movement as a freelance journalist and lecturer at city colleges. Returning to Boston in the late 1960s, Hicks taught at Brandeis University, Goddard College, and Brown University. He headed liberal arts and sciences at Roxbury Community College. Hicks was one of the founders of Umbra Magazine and also a member of the Harlem Writers Guild. During these years, he was engaged in national and international liberation struggles and for a brief period, was employed at Time Magazine as a researcher. In 1992, Hicks was named Director of Community Collaborations at New England Conservatory of Music. Hicks passed away on August 25, 2013 at age 80. |
