| Abstract | Vocalist Thornton James "Pookie" Hudson was born on June 11, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa. His family moved to Gary, Indiana shortly after his birth. In 1948, while in junior high school, he formed his first Doo-Wop singing group, The Four Bees. In 1953, The Spaniels were created, including Hudson as their lead singer. The first tenor was Ernest Warren, the second tenor Willie C. Jackson, baritone Opal Courtney, Jr., and bass was Gerald Gregory. Upon graduating from high school in 1953, the group recorded its first single Baby Its You. In 1954, The Spaniels reached the height of their Doo-Wop success when their multi-million-dollar single Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight, written by Hudson, hit number twenty-four on Billboard's Top 40 and rose to number five on the R & B chart. Hudson continued to perform with The Spaniels. He resided in Washington, D.C. and passed away on January 16, 2007 at age 72. |
