520 a| Professor Charles Henry III was born on August 17, 1947 in Newark, Ohio. After receiving his B.A. degree in political science, he attended graduate school at the University of Chicago and was awarded an American Political Science Congressional Fellowship in 1972. In 1974, he earned his Ph.D. degree in political science from the University of Chicago. After teaching at Howard and Denison Universities, he began teaching African American Studies at the University of California at Berkeley in 1981. Henry wrote over eighty articles and authored/edited seven books including Ralph Bunche: Model Negro or American Other. He served as chair of Amnesty International USA and president of the National Council for Black Studies. In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed him to a six-year term on the National Council on the Humanities. Henry served as a Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Bologna, Italy (2003) and Tours, France (2006).;
