520 a| Politician Mayor Richard Hatcher was born on July 10, 1933 in Michigan City, Indiana. He received his B.S. degree in business and government from Indiana University and his LL. B. in criminal law with honors in 1956. He earned his J.D. degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1959. Hatcher began practicing law in East Chicago, Indiana and served as deputy prosecutor for Lake County. He was elected to the City Council of Gary, Indiana in 1963. He was elected mayor of Gary in 1967 and served for twenty years. Hatcher was the first African American to fill this role in any major U.S. City. In 1988, Hatcher started his own consulting firm. In 1989, he taught political science at Roosevelt University and at Valparaiso University in 1991. Hatcher authored numerous articles, has affiliations with various civic, political and civil rights organizations. He received many awards and honors for his dedication.;
