520 a| Historian Timuel Black was born on December 7, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois. At Roosevelt University, Black received his bachelor's degree. Drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, Black survived the Normandy Invasion and Battle of the Bulge to witness the horrors of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Inspired to commit his life to social justice, Black returned to the U.S. and earned his M.S.W. degree from the University of Chicago in 1954. He taught at a variety of high schools as well as colleges and universities, and was a pioneer in the independent black political movement, coining the phrase "plantation politics." Black campaigned for positions as Chicago's 4th Ward alderman, state senator of the 22nd District and state representative of the 22nd District. He also authored Bridges of Memory: Chicago's First Wave of Great Migration, a chronicle of Chicago's twentieth century African American history based upon his original research.;
