Abstract Academic administrator, author, diversity specialist, and education administrator Nelvia Brady was born on February 11, 1948, in Fairfield, Alabama. Brady earned her B.A. degree from the University of Illinois and then, in 1973, received her M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin. Brady began working as a counselor in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She returned to school and in 1978, received her Ph.D. at Michigan State University. By 1981, Brady was working for the Chicago Public Schools, and rose to associate superintendent. In 1988, she became both the first African American and female to serve as chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago. In 1994, Brady went into the business world, working as senior vice president of an executive recruiting firm, Carrington & Carrington. Brady returned to academia in 2002, when she began teaching at Trinity Christian College. Brady has authored two books, and received numerous commendations and awards for her work.
