| Abstract | Religious leader and civil rights activist Reverend Willie T. Barrow was born on December 7, 1924 in Burton, Texas. Barrow graduated from Warner-Pacific Theological Seminary in Portland, and was ordained as a minister. From 1953 to 1965, she was a field organizer for Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. During the 1960s, Barrow helped to found Operation Breadbasket in Chicago, later serving as co-chair of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and as an aide to HistoryMaker Reverend Jesse L. Jackson. Barrow also served as associate minister of the Vernon Park Church of God in Chicago, and was active in the National Urban League and National Council of Negro Women. Barrow earned D.D. degree in Monrovia, Liberia and a leadership certificate from Harvard University. In 2004, she published How to Get Married and Stay Married. Reverend Barrow passed away on March 12, 2015 at the age of ninety. |
