She obtained her B.A. degree in mass media arts from Hampton University in 1976, and her M.A. degree in journalism from the University of Michigan in 1979. In 1977, Britt's beloved older brother, Darrell, was shot and killed by police officers in Gary, Indiana. Britt worked as a staff writer for the Detroit Free Press, USA Today, and The Washington Post, where she became a Metro columnist, which she described as a dream job. Her column has appeared in sixty-two newspapers, and was syndicated by the Washington Post Writer's Group. In 2011, her book, Brothers (& Me): A Memoir of Loving and Giving, was published. She received numerous writing awards from organizations including the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.;
