Abstract Civil rights lawyer Derrick A. Bell, Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 16, 1930. After earning his A.B. from Duquesne University, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea for two years. Upon returning, he earned an L.L.B. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. After working for the Justice Department, Bell was recruited by Thurgood Marshall to work for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in 1959. In 1971, he became the first African American tenured professor at Harvard Law School, and later became the first African American dean of the University of Oregon Law School. After resigning in protest from Oregon, he returned to Harvard, but resigned in 1992 over the low numbers of women of color being offered tenure.
