When national governments can no longer protect their citizens from violence, people must leave their homes to protect themselves and their families. Often, they may leave their country altogether and seek safety and shelter in another country. These victims of war and conflict are known as refugees. Resolving the current migration crisis will require the United States to remain engaged with the international community. America has always been an international leader when it comes to helping refugees. All nations must work together to address the conditions that cause refugee crises, such as poverty, climate change, civil war, and religious or ethnic persecution.
