Summary The Stony Gap Sandstone Member is the basal member of the Hinton Formation which is the medial formation within the Mauch Chunk Group. The unit is composed predominantly of a relatively well-sorted quartz arenite. Lithofacies A, located at the base of the Stony Gap Sandstone, is dominated by the presence of trough-, planar-and ripple-marked laminar-bedded sandstones containing (rip-up) shale clasts, pyritized nodules and log impressions. Lithofacies A is interpreted to be channeled or sheet sands of a delta front environment. Lithofacies B consists of small trough- and planar-crossbeds, herringbone-crossbeds interbedded with laminar-bedding, and multi-storied fining- upward sequences containing crevasse splays. Lithofacies B represesents a meander-type fluvial system with some marine reworking of the channel sands. The upper portion of the unit, represented by lithofacies C, is dominated by multiple fining-upward sequences of sandstones, siltstones and shales capped by coal seams. Lithofacies B/C contact marks the abandonment of delta progradation. Lithofacies C is interpreted to be estuarine deposits. Paleocurrent indicators demonstrate predominantly polymodal patterns which are to be interpreted as a convergence of marine and fluvial environments along the margin of the prograding delta. In some localities, patterns demonstrate predominant trends (northeast to southwest) and others bimodal trends (northwest-southeast). An interpretation for the lithofacies model of the Stony Gap Sandstone suggests a convergence of fluvial and marine environments during delta progradation. Progradation was followed by delta abandonment as well as a relative rise in sea level depositing transgressive marine sediments.
