| Abstract | The role of music in the construction of cultural identity and ethnicity has received significant attention in recent anthropological and ethnomusicological literature. As one of the most highly structured human cultural expressions, music can encapsulate a social or ethnic group's beliefs and views with greater clarity than ideology. The complex mosaic of African-American-Latino musical traditions offers a special opportunity to portray the dynamic relationship between music and culture. Fifteen European, American, Caribbean, and South American scholars from the disciplines of anthropology, musicology, and sociology present their observations here. Chapters such as 'Whoever We Are Today, We Can Sing You a Song About It,' by Anthony Seeger; 'Cuban Music and Ethnicity: Historical Considerations,' by Victoria Eli Rodríguez; 'The Afro-French Settlement and the Legacy of Its Music to the Cuban People,' by Olavo Alén Rodríguez; and 'Music and Black Ethnicity in the Dominican Republic,' by Martha Ellen Davis, illuminate the richness of this unique musical heritage. This book explores the relationship between music and black ethnicity, including the changing nature of ethnicity, cultural expressions of identity, musical styles as they reflect identity, and the current state and future needs of this field of research. |
