| Abstract | This book features a multidisciplinary focus on walking as a mode in the context of transportation, urban planning and health. Breaking down the silos in current research, this book brings together researchers and practitioners from transport, public health and urban planning to stimulate discussion and collaboration among stakeholders across sectors to instigate travel behaviour change to maximise health, environmental and economic benefits at the population level. As such, the contents will be of interest to students of transport, public health and planning, researchers wanting to take a multidisciplinary approach to the under-researched area of walking, as well as creators of public policy who will be inspired by the catalogue of positive experiences from around the world. The contents cover the population prevalence and trends in walking, the economic and health benefits of walking and how to promote and increase walking through environmental changes, planning initiatives, public policies, social programmes and technological change as well as a look into the future role of walking in our urban environment. Case studies show the varying experience from around the world in walking policy and transportation and planning initiatives. The chapters present new research or new reviews of research. Although the links between transport and health have long been recognised in the transport and health disciplines separately, it is a fairly recent phenomenon that they have been seen as a legitimate inter- and multi disciplinary area. It is a feature of this book that the different approaches to walking and its impacts are a central focus to show how the different disciplines can build knowledge together to create a better outcome for citizens.
