The author undertook to probe the form and design of the sonata idea and sonata-form in the Baroque and Classic traditions from an "evolutionist" viewpoint, dissecting the 'evolution' of the 'sonata form' throughout the Classic era. Among the compositions he studied, analyzed, and discussed in this book (with nearly 100 musical examples) were Kuhnau's "Biblical" sonatas, and the sonatas of Pasquini, C. P. E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, Dussek, Rust, Beethoven, Weber, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Brahms, Liszt and Grieg. The endurance of the sonata today as a viable mode of musical expression and its exploration by contemporary composers from Claude Debussy to Samuel Barber would seem to answer the question the author poses at the end of the book--"Shall we be able to say 'La sonate est morte! Vive la sonate!' Time will tell.";
