Summary This text results from discussions between the two editors in 2013, when the second suggested that it would be an appropriate time to attempt to bring together an international group of workers from the oil industry, academia, and government to discuss, review, and document the many geological facets of the Upper Jurassic coarse clastic, deep-water reservoirs (the 'Brae Play'-a term suggested by Mark Jones, who is gratefully acknowledged by the editors) found within the South Viking Graben (SVG) area of the northern North Sea. It was considered that this could provide a more detailed, comprehensive account of the area than had been possible previously, which might aid further industry activity within and adjacent to the graben and provide analog material for exploration in other rift basins around the world.
