| Abstract | In Christ's time, the Valaks were shepherds leading a totally isolated and almost fully self sufficient life in the mountains of northern Greece. They were socially organized in close-knit clans whose great wish was to achieve progress. They acquired new power when they became Roman citizens and were able to leave their country and adapt to new conditions thereby making themselves indispensable. They were brewers in Hamburg, jewellers in Vienna, furriers in Budapest, millers in Alexandria, financiers in New-York, teachers in Athens, but they never really lost their clan spirit. "They were to disappear" is the story of a man who now lives in the mountains of his ancestors. Once a year, in the evening of August 15th, his village organizes the Great dance which brings all Valaques together in the highlands of Samarina. |
