| Abstract | Old Katohara is one of the last surviving 'Tousseuh', a title that used to be given by ancient Mandchu emperors to the governor of a province. Katohara remembers his past and the past of his people, the Yis. The Yis are a minority of Caucasian origin: farmers and cattle breeders nowadays, the Yis live in the remote area of the Lian-chan mountains of Sichuan in the southwest of China. During their long migration around the 13th century, they had to face the Mandchu and the Chinese before they could setlle in the area. Their society was divided into classes and castes with the noblemen owning most of the land, while the slaves had almost nothing to live on but corn and buckwheat. Today, Katohara has nothing left but the knowledge of his people's collective memory. He is about to participate in the traditional yearly Torch Festival. How will the ancient Tousseuh be accepted there? |
