Abstract Simon and Nicola are two teachers who share their workload problems with a panel of experts to gain ideas on how to better manage their workload. The panel consists of Julian Stanley, Chief Executive of the Teacher Support Network; Sharon Gilbert, a financial advisor to the teaching profession; and Robert Latham, a senior counsellor working for Teacherline. Nicola, a part time primary teacher, feels she is still teaching more than half a timetable. The panel discuss the right of teachers to have PPA time and explore with Nicola whether she might take this time out of school to prevent interruptions. Simon, a former secondary head of ICT, quit his post due to workload pressures. The panel discuss with him how his workload became unmanageable and the reaction from the school. Simon talks about the problem of applying for new posts after this period of difficulty and the panel talk about ways of positively describing this in job applications.
