| Abstract | Second Chance is about the Valued Youth scheme which places permanently excluded pupils in primary schools as tutors. The programme follows two girls from Howbury Centre PRU in Bexley, Lucy aged 16 and Rachel aged 14, who are on the Valued Youth programme. Lucy became a Valued Youth tutor at her old primary school, Days Lane, 12 months ago. The Head was anxious at first but Lucy has proved herself capable and reliable. Rachel was being bullied at school and became school phobic. Her confidence was shattered but when she started as a Valued Youth tutor, she became self-assured and is doing well academically.Teachers and mothers talk about the changes in attitude they have seen in the girls and the heads of both primary schools talk about the benefits to their pupils, who take the girls at face value. The ends with a celebration event in which Lucy and Rachel receive prizes for achievement. |
