Abstract |
For many, Lutheran music means the music of Bach, but Bach stands at the pinnacle of a long and important tradition of church music that began in the 16th and blossomed in the 17th century. What the author gives us here is a valuable introductory guide to the principal composers of this pre-Bach Lutheran tradition, with a very useful overview of their compositional output. These are the men whose musical art and artistry formed the foundation on which Bach was able to build. |
