Subject(s)
Abstract Several luminaries can claim to have invented the gramophone. Only one man made mass duplication of discs possible - Emil Berliner. As a result, a major new industry came into being. In this program tracing the evolution of sound recording, his grandson, Oliver, tells the story of his life and his achievement. Caruso and other great performers are heard in early recordings, and contributors, including John Eliot Gardiner, Pierre Boulez, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, comment on the pros and cons of today's advanced technology.
