Abstract Features animated shorts by Russian animator Yuri Norstein, including his first film, 25th : the first day, about the first day of the October Revolution, which combines poetry by Mayakovsky and music by Shostakovich with images and motifs inspired by the art of a number of Russia's leading avant-garde and post-revolutionary artists. Includes Battle of Kerjenets, which is based on a legendary Russian battle and features frescoes, icons, and Rimsky-Korsakov music, and several animated shorts based on Russian folk tales. Also presents Tale of tales, which weaves threads of realism and nostalgia around a popular Russian lullaby, Pablo Picasso's minotaur, and images of the lost glories of Alexander Pushkin and the golden age of Russian literature.
