Summary Description: Journal kept by John MacGillivray detailing his zoological, geological, naturalist and botanical observations during an expedition to Australia and New Zealand. He travelled aboard HMS Herald which was commissioned for surveying service in the South Seas along with HMS Torch, an iron steam vessel. They departed from Plymouth, travelling to Madeira, Cape Verde, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope, and on to Australia and New Zealand, including St Paul, Matthew, and Lord Howe islands. MacGillivray describes wildlife, landscape, shipboard activities, and geology. Includes lists of supplies required by the naturalists on board HMS Herald.
