The fleet, consisting of two large galleons and two smaller tender vessels, sails from Puerto de la Navidad in New Spain on Nov. 20, 1564. The account describes the ships and their crew, the course they followed, and the islands they claim for the Crown along the way. On Jan. 22, 1565, the ships reach the island of Guam, and the author includes his observations on the native inhabitants, their canoes, their food, and the treacherous ways they exhibit in their dealings with the Spanish. Other accounts are given of the confrontations between natives and Spaniards on the islands of Cebu, Leyte, Tandaya, Mazagua, and Camiguinin. On the island of Bohol, Legaspi and his men capture a large vessel from Borneo carrying Moros (Muslim) traders, from whom they learn a great deal about navigation and trade among the islands, and discover that the Portuguese and Moluccans have turned the natives against the Spanish. Also included are descriptions of Legaspi's meetings with native chieftains, Zicatuna and Zigala. In late April, Legaspi returns to Cebu, where he decides to establish a Spanish settlement to be called San Miguel. Although he negotiates peace with the native chief Tupas, after three days a Spaniard is killed, and hostilities resume. This portion of the account concludes as the Spanish encampment is partially destroyed by a fire set by some members of the expedition, and as Legaspi awaits the arrival of additional aid from New Spain.;
