Summary |
Description: Richly illustrated author's copy of a history of Ceylon, covering the years 1622-1693, dedicated to Pedro II of Portugal. The second half relates the wars between the Dutch and Portuguese for control of the island, including the great siege of Colombo (October 1655 - May 1656). Ribeiro also criticises Portuguese colonial administration and imperial overreach. A copy of an article by C R Boxer on the author, his life, and his work is included at the end of the volume. |
