| Abstract | This is the first major work to be concerned with an important and little-known period of twentieth-century music. The author reviews the political and social situation in Russia during the period 1910-1929, the works of the earlier Russian nationalist school, and the cultural heritage of folk music, which directly influenced composers in the twentieth century. He also discusses the relationship between Russian music and the work of Western composers, and the influence of Russian music of this period on later musical developments in the West. With a new perspective, the author views the works of Scriabin and Prokofiev against the background of Russian music of the period and provides flesh and unexpected insights into their compositions. The author analyzes in detail the works of Arthur Lourie, an avant-garde composer who was the first commissar in charge of music in the USSR after the Revolution; Nikolai Roslavets, an influential journalist as well as a composer; and Aleksandr Mosolov [Mossolov], a composer of some powerful music in the twenties who was later expelled from the Composers' Union. Among the many other composers whose music is scrutinized in this volume are Aleksandr Tcherepnin, Vladimir Deshovov [Deshevov], Nikolai Lopatnikov, and Leo Ornstein. |
